December 3rd was National PKU Awareness Day. Phenylketonuria, PKU, is a rare inherited metabolic disorder where the enzyme that breaks down the protein phenylalanine is absent or severely low. The build up of phenylalanine, or PHE, in the blood will cause brain and nerve damage. While there is a medication that can help decrease PHE levels, the response rate is different for each patient. The best treatment is to regulate PHE levels by a strict diet.
Here is a great video explaining the lifestyle of a PKUer: PKU Lifestyle
The video was produced by PKU advocate Kevin Alexander. He has an awesome YouTube channel and Facebook page full of information on PKU.
I hope the video is an eye opener on how difficult this disorder is on the PKUer and their families.
